L’ÉCOLE and its editorial policy
L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts supported by Van Cleef & Arpels, supports the publication of books by partnering with prestigious publishers. Following the trilogy Flora (2016), Fauna (2017) and Figures & Faces (2018), dedicated to the most beautiful artworks from the Galerie des Bijoux at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, cowritten by Evelyne Possémé and Patrick Mauriès, L’ÉCOLE assisted the publication of Men’s Rings (Delphine Antoine, Albin Michel) and For the Love of Jewelry (Jean-Noël Mouret, Mercure de France). The editorial policy is in line with L’ÉCOLE’s central mission – to share the culture of jewelery with a large and varied audience – in parallel with the organization of classes, talks, exhibitions and research projects.
A Book on the crafts of jewelry
This book is born from the realization that there aren’t any publications for the general public which present the crafts of jewelry. Even though these crafts bring together exceptional and prestigious expertise, they are still insufficiently known. After situating them within their historical context, the book presents their individual description. It also touches upon the future and the stakes of transmission, using a didactic approach in terms of form and content.
This book, beautifully illustrated with photographs from major jewelry houses (including Boucheron, Cartier, Chaumet, Mellerio, Van Cleef & Arpels), showcases the diversity, the demanding and technical nature, but also the beauty of the different gestures which are combined in order to achieve the most precious and daring creations.
These skills, which are part of an ancient history of craftsmanship, are passed on to artisans of the presentday and future thanks to the schools of jewelry arts and workshops. The constant search for innovation from creators enables the rejuvenation of these crafts while remaining faithful to the tradition of excellence. From the birth of the jewel, from the designer to the polishing, including the cutting of gemstones and their setting, all the technical phases of jewelry creation are unveiled. Thanks to the iconographic choices which highlight the work of craftsmen and their virtuosity, this book allows for the discovery of the crafts of jewelry and is an invitation to wonder.
