Course cycle

JANUARY - FEBRUARY • Art & Science Cycle: The Universe of Gemstones

Diamond, ruby, emerald, sapphire, pearl

Between science, history, and symbolism, gemstones reveal their many facets.

Over the course of five classes, discover the composition and creation of these precious stones. Handle unique, authentic specimens to learn how to recognize their properties and distinctive features. Explore their history and the meanings they have carried across cultures.

The journey begins as you walk into the historical Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau on Paris’ Grands Boulevards. In the heart of this 18th century mansion, you meet your two guides: a gemologist and an art historian.

Together, they share their passion and invite you to explore this world of gems where science, culture, and craftsmanship are in constant dialogue: "Each gem has its story, its mysteries. To discover and observe these stones up close is a rare and precious experience. They have all left their mark on culture, art, and the history of jewelry…"  Paul, Art Historian and Professor at L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Art

The sessions weave together science, culture, and history, offering a full exploration of gemstones in all their dimensions. The experience includes direct observation and handling of unique specimens from the collections of L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.

Each session in this cycle is dedicated to one gem:

  • The diamond will dazzle you with its unique characteristics, its incomparable brilliance, and the role it has played in the societies of Antiquity.
  • The emerald will reveal its characteristic inclusions — known as “jardins” — and its place in the opulent Mughal courts and European treasures.
  • The sapphire, whether in its celestial blue or in its more unexpected hues, will invite you to explore its divine symbolism and the fascination it continues to hold today.
  • The ruby, stone of fire and power, will unveil its secrets along with its scientific specificities, from inclusions to fluorescence.
  • The pearl, a biomineral jewel, will transport you from the depths of the sea to the royal courts, across ancient myths, trade routes, and contemporary cultures.

The sessions weave together science, culture, and history, offering a full exploration of gemstones in all their dimensions. The experience includes direct observation and handling of unique specimens from the collections of L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.
