L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts and the Italian publishing house Franco Maria Ricci present Dédale. The very singular Dédale series features major literary works as well as little-known or obscure texts, all with ties to the world of jewelry, precious stones and the arts in general. Richly illustrated, each book begins with the manifesto of the series, a foreword by a guest author and a thematic introduction by an expert at L’ÉCOLE. Two new volumes will be added in the series every year, in spring and fall. Each work is available in a standard edition and in a collector’s edition. “Here’s someone who understands these things for once,” he rejoiced, turning triumphantly to his family. “At last, at long last a man who can tell you what my prints are worth. You’ve always been so cross with me for putting all the money I had to spare into my collection, that’s the truth of it: over sixty years no beer, no wine, no tobacco, no travelling, no visits to the theatre, no books – I was always saving and saving for these prints. But one day, when I’m gone, you’ll see – you two will be rich, richer than anyone in this town, as rich as the richest in Dresden, then for a change you’ll be glad of my folly. However, as long as I live not a single one of these prints leaves the house – they’ll have to carry me out first and only then my collection.”
Collectors can be egotistical monsters driven by an inner force that only they can understand. They can imagine to be competing against an invisible rival, who is in fact none other than themselves.
In The Invisible Collection, Zweig develops a subtle reflection on our relationship to objects – our quest for them, their possession and contemplation, and the resulting aesthetic experience.
