L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts and the Italian publishing house Franco Maria Ricci present Dédale. The very singular Dédale series features major literary works as well as little-known or obscure texts, all with ties to the world of jewelry, precious stones and the arts in general. Richly illustrated, each book begins with the manifesto of the series, a foreword by a guest author and a thematic introduction by an expert at L’ÉCOLE. Two new volumes will be added in the series every year, in spring and fall. Each work is available in a standard edition and in a collector’s edition.
“No, not I,” said Silver. “Flint was cap’n; I was quartermaster, along of my timber leg. The same broadside I lost my leg, old Pew lost his deadlights. It was a master surgeon, him that ampytated me – out of college and all – Latin by the bucket, and what not; but he was hanged like a dog, and sun-dried like the rest, at Corso Castle. That was Roberts’ men, that was, and comed of changing names to their ships – Royal Fortune and so on. Now, what a ship was christened, so let her stay, I says. So it was with the Cassandra, as brought us all safe home from Malabar, after England took the Viceroy of the Indies; so it was with the old Walrus, Flint’s old ship, as I’ve seen amuck with the red blood and fit to sink with gold.”
In Stevenson’s hands, the boys’ adventure story had magically become an epic exploration of the ambiguity of moral values and the duplicitous essence of human nature.
Among the various myths, tales, legends, romances, and other stories that lulled our childhood, there is one thing that is recurrent, almost essential, and capable of arousing our deepest wonder on its own: treasure.
