THE HÔTEL DE MERCY-ARGENTEAU, A SETTING FOR HISTORY

Constructed in 1778 from plans by Firmin Perlin and financed by the Marquis of Laborde, the Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau owes its name to its first occupant, Florimond-Claude, Count of Mercy-Argenteau, the Austrian ambassador to France from 1766 to 1790 and Marie-Antoinette’s right-hand man. Gaining distinction both as one of the first residences to be built along Paris’ Grands Boulevards and one of the last to be conserved, the hôtel, transformed endlessly and recently restored, today opens its doors to students and visitors at L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.

CAMEOS AND INTAGLIOS

Amply illustrated and documented, this work constitutes a true introductory text to glyptic art, thanks to its chronological approach to the history of engraved gems in the West. The author unveils a miniature world which has fascinated kings, emperors, collectors and admirers of art. With the subtle engraved effects, cameos (engraved in relief) and intaglios (engraved in recess) have come down to us mounted on jewels or on relics, following all the themes of the history of art: mythology, symbols, portraits, allegories, etc.

The Art of the Jeweler English Cover.jpg

THE ART OF THE JEWELER, EXCELLENCE AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

This book is born from the realization that there aren’t any publications for the general public which present the crafts of jewelry. Even though these crafts bring together exceptional and prestigious expertise, they are still insufficiently known.
Beautifully illustrated with photographs from major jewelry houses, this book showcases the diversity, the demanding and technical nature, but also the beauty of the different gestures which are combined in order to achieve the most precious and daring creations. Thanks to the iconographic choices which highlight the work of craftsmen and their virtuosity, this book allows for the discovery of the crafts of jewelry and is an invitation to wonder.

STAGE JEWELS OF THE COMÉDIE-FRANÇAISE

Crowns, tiaras, jewel-ornaments, and bracelets: the unsuspected treasures of the illustrious Comédie-Française, founded in Paris in 1680, have been restored to their original splendor and are once again shining brightly. Worn by the greatest actors and actresses of their time, from Talma to Geneviève Casile and Sarah Bernhardt, they were designed to create an illusion on the head of an emperor, on the neck of a queen, or on the arms of a tragedienne: faux par excellence, these jewels embody an essential role that goes far beyond that of a simple stage accessory.

Crafted from cut or colored glass, copper and brass, pewter or silver-gilt, they are marvelous imitations of precious stones, diamonds, and antique cameos, as well as gold and silver. The extreme complexity and ingenuity of their workmanship bear witness to the unique skills of the jewelers of their time.

This book provides the public with an unprecedented look at around 40 of these stage jewels from the Parisian theater, dating from the late eighteenth century to the 1980s, enriched with costumes, graphic works, and archival documents, to understand both their historical and symbolic dimensions.

A NEW ART. METAMORPHOSES OF JEWELRY, 1880 - 1914

Jewelry holds a central place in the profound evolution in aesthetics that began in the 1880s. Far from being a mere reflection of a history of art written elsewhere – in the “major” fields of painting, sculpture, or architecture – it played an active role in a radical imaginative renewal fueled by developments in scientific knowledge that were being diffused across a newly invigorated visual culture.

Supplemented with a glossary of materials and techniques, as well as an ample bibliography, this book helps us understand the extraordinary rise of the art of jewelry and bijouterie in France from 1880 to 1914.

The work of a lifetime, the collection covers the long history of glyptic production through the 19th century. Catalogue designing jewels EN.png

DESIGNING JEWELS

The jewelry drawing has long remained hidden from view and from the public. Functional or the testimonials of unfulfilled dreams, since the 15th century, these paper jewels nevertheless constitute the unknown side of the jewels to which they have often given birth.
This book presents some one hundred drawings, mainly from the Van Cleef & Arpels Jewelry Culture Fund, ranging from the second half of the 18th century to the start of the 20th century. For the first time, it sheds light on this largely ignored part of the decorative arts, in which anonymous artisans and artists rub shoulders with the great figures of the jewelry world, Tiffany, Lalique, Vever, as well as renowned workshops, like Paillet, Brédillard and Mellerio- Borgnis.
Through the study of its technique, authors or its use, the book, which accompanies the exhibition at L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, beginning on October 14, 2021, provides a glimpse into a range of topics, and shines light on a type of drawing that is at once a tool, an archival document and a veritable work of art.

JEAN VENDOME ARTIST JEWELER

This exhibition, presented at L’ÉCOLE Paris during Fall 2019, highlighted the work of the Artist Jeweler, Jean Vendome. As a true artist, set about creating his own world, he bucked fashion trends with his personal and pioneering style. Simple yet sophisticated, powerful yet intricate, eccentric yet well-designed, constructed and deconstructed, Jean Vendome’s jewelry is always emotional.

The 130 pieces that were on display, from private and public collections, put forward his prolific creations, which resonates like a poetic and meaningful echo of the major artistic movements of the second half of the 20th century.

LACLOCHE, JEWELERS 1892 – 1967

This exhibition was presented at L’ÉCOLE Paris in the Winter 2019 and was a tribute to the Maison Lacloche, which was one of Paris’ celebrated jewelry houses from the Belle Époque period to the 1960s.
Through jewelry, clocks (both large and small), and vanity cases—the Lacloche specialty—as well as archival documents, the retrospective will illustrate various trends, including the naturalism of Art Nouveau, Egyptomania and the penchant for the Far East during the Roaring Twenties, the modernism of Art Deco, and the charmingly seductive creations of the 1950s.

LACLOCHE JEWELERS

This monograph is the first to retrace the astonishing rise of the Lacloche family despite their modest beginnings at the rue de Châteaudun in 1892. Renowned for their elegance and refined craftsmanship, the models made by Lacloche Frères, and their successor, Jacques Lacloche, were designed by the best Parisian workshops, such as Strauss Allard Meyer, Verger, Helluin-Mattlinger, Langlois and Rubel, to which this book pays tribute. Two extraordinary gouache albums, hitherto unpublished, bring to life the 63 jewels and 21 clocks presented by Lacloche Frères at the 1925 Exhibition.

PRECIOUS ART DECO OBJECTS

This exhibition was presented at L’ÉCOLE Paris in Spring 2018, in Dubai during Spring 2019 and in Hong-Kong during Fall 2019 and it gathered a selection of art objects from an exclusive collection of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan.
The precious boxes that make up that collection were amassed for his wife, the Princess Catherine Aleya Beriketti, and represent incredible masterpieces of inventiveness, creativity, fantasy, skills and technical prowess.
These precious objects, whose craftsmanship was as important as their function, were specially designed for the first wave of 'liberated' women in the 1920s: women who smoked, enjoyed going out, applied make-up in public, and kept track of their numerous social engagements with a watch or a clock.

THE FABULOUS DESTINY OF TAVERNIER'S DIAMONDS: FROM THE GREAT MOGUL TO THE SUN KING

This permanent exhibition presented at L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts of Paris retraces the history of the diamonds purchased by Louis XIV from the trader and traveler Jean-Baptiste Tavernier in 1668.

A fabulous story based on a journey from the Mogul Empire of India and the diamond mines of Golkonda to France under the reign of the Sun King and the Château de Versailles, a journey made along the trade routes connecting East to West. Amongst the several thousand diamonds brought from India by Tavernier and offered to the Sun King in 1668, twenty stood out for their breathtaking beauty. They all disappeared in the 19th century, with the exception of the Blue Diamond, but are brought back to life here through this permanent exhibition organized by L'ECOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, with the support of Van Cleef & Arpels.
