A New Art. Metamorphoses of Jewelry – 1880–1914

Jewelry played a central role in the profound changes in esthetics that began in the 1880s. Far from being the mere reflection of art history that transpires elsewhere–in the "major" fields of painting, sculpture and architecture–it was part of the radical renewal of the creative realm fueled by expansion of scientific knowledge and its dissemination throughout a widely shared visual culture.
Paired with a glossary of materials and techniques and an extensive bibliography, this book facilitates our understanding of the extraordinary blossoming of the jewelry-making arts in France between 1880 and 1914.
The assimilation of jewelry to the status of ‘a piece of art,’ as proclaimed by the practitioners of Art Nouveau, was the result of a process which had gradually afforded more and more prestige and importance to the ‘minor’ arts, and which had developed throughout the 19th century.
