Daniel Brush has produced a body of work that is impossible to classify. For nearly 50 years, he worked in his New York studio creating drawings, monumental paintings, sculptures and jewelry that are stunning in their singularity. Spanning lyricism and rigor, sentiment and reason, pursuit and achievement, his output does not fall into any defined category. And yet it is rooted in art history and builds on works from the past.
That explains the origins of the Cuffs series: 72 stainless steel cuffs, discreetly embellished with diamonds, ruby and sapphires. The pieces were inspired by an exhibition featuring the ancient jewelry of the Nizam of Hyderabad. The show sparked Daniel Brush's interest in mughal bracelets and their importance in India's history and culture: studying the past feeds creative inspiration. It took 3 years for the project to mature from an idea to a finished series.
The work of Daniel Brush defies definition. Over the course of fifty years, he produced in his New York studio a series of drawings, large-scale canvases, sculptures and jewelry of astonishing singularity.
